Alex Gordon gets $37.5M Guaranteed, Potentially Beyond $50M

The Kansas City Royals and former first round draft pick Alex Gordon have come to terms on a contract extension.

The teams has guaranteed Gordon $37.5 million over the next four years – $6 million in 2012, $9 million in 2013, $10 million in 2014 and $12.5 million in 2015. As well, the contract gives Gordon a player option in 2016 for $12.5M. Performance bonuses are also included.

So, essentially, $50M guaranteed for Gordon over 5 years.

The contract extension comes after Gordon finally began living up to his draft status in 2011, when he hit 2011 season. Gordon hit .303 with 23 homers, 45 doubles and 87 RBIs and won an American League Gold Glove while playing left field.

What are your thoughts on Gordon’s contract?

  • Nice to have Gordon locked up. Before this spring, I was a bit worried if he could keep it up offensively. I know everyone believes you shouldn’t put too much weight on spring training, but Gordon’s continued offense gives me excitement that he can and will continue.
