Blue Rocks Aim to Find Consistency Heading Into Final Month of Season

This season must be driving Blue Rocks manager Vance Wilson crazy. Last Saturday night (Monkey Rodeo Night) the team completes a sweep of the Potomac Nationals for their 5th win in a row and the team is playing well in all phases of the game. Head out on the road against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, a team mired in 3 game home losing streak, and end up getting swept in the 4 game series. But just now the Rocks just swept the Salem Red Sox in a 3 game series. Got that?

If anything has helped the Rocks attempt to become even remotely more offensively consistant is the emergence of 1B/DH Matt Fields. In the last 10 games he’s batting .356 in his last 10 games but more importantly he gives the team a deep ball threat that takes the pressure of the rest of the offense. Matt was signed right at the beginning if the second half of the season and after a slow start is proving the Blue Rocks/Royals brain trust right in signing him.

The pitching for the most part continues to be the most consistent part of the of the team and even with some big names being promoted to AA NW Arkansas, the replacements are filling in nicely. RHP Brooks Pounder is a 2nd half call up from Kane County and has a 3-3 record in 9 appearances and pitched 5.2 inning with 4 strikeouts in the sweep of Salem Sunday.

What all this means is the Rocks have a 15-15 record and are 1 game out of first so if the team can become more consistent, they might be in line for division title and playoff birth. The sweep of Salem would go a long way to making this happen.

Here’s video of what is becoming the popular Monkey Cowboy Rodeo. If you saw the NFL playoff game last season between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Denver Broncos, they were the halftime show and everyone was talking about them as much as the thrilling finish of the game. He started his show in Wilmington and calls Frawley Stadium home. Maybe they might do the Superbowl next year but til then enjoy:
