Joey Votto told the Cincinnati Enquirer he is close to signing a long-term contract extension with the Cincinnati Reds.
Reportedly, the deal will be 10 years and $225 million and includes the two years he already is signed for.
It is the fourth largest deal in Major League Baseball history. The deal was first reported by MLBTradeRumors. The terms were first reported by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
According to Ken Rosenthal, this deal with Votto will likely kill all chances the Reds have at signing 2B Brandon Phillips, who is a free agent following the 2012 season.

Joey Votto is a great player but, 20+ million per year is way too much.
I agree. He deserves big money, but not Albert Pujols type money.
wow. I guess the Angels, Tigers and Reds are all trying to one-up each other. This is a horrid contract that the Reds may regret even before it starts.
