Royals 2011 Spring game vs. Diamondbacks

Kansas City’s Top 5 Prospects

Kansas city has one of the most promising prospect farms of any team in the MLB, mainly because of the countless losing seasons that have given us high draft picks. So lets look at Kansas Cities top 5 most promising prospects.

1: Wil Myers AA OF:

21-year-old Wil Myers has a lot of promise having risen through the minor leagues very fast, but he had some problems last year only hitting .254, with a .745 OPS.  But, Myers shows a knack for hitting the ball and plays the outfield position like a pro. You could expect to see him on opening day in just a few years.

2: Johnny Giavotella AAA  2B:

Johnny Giavotella is about 3-12 months away from becoming a Kansas City Royal. He played great last year for the Omaha Storm Chasers hitting .338 with 72 RBI’s. Giavotella is one of my favorite prospects, because he has so much upside, a solid bat and a gold glove. The only thing he is has to do is learn how to play major league baseball, which I think he will.

3: Mike Montgomery AAA SP:

Mike Montgomery played pretty poor for the Storm Chasers last year but he played fantastic in A, and AA. But, Mike Montgomery has struggled in AAA throwing 5.32 ERA in 27 starts.  He also struggled with runs, giving up 95 runs in 150 innings. But, lets no focus on the negatives Montgomery has tremendous upside and has a solid slider and fastball, he just needs to work more on his command.

4: Bubba Starling OF:

Bubba Starling is a home-grown talent having been raised in Gardner, Kansas and, is a hell of an athlete even winning USA Today’s High School Baseball and Football player of the year. He has a lot of speed and power. I really look forward to seeing him in blue.

5: Clint Robinson AAA 1B:

Clint Robinson is Kansas City’s most underrated prospect. The Jefferson City, Missouri native has hit .326 with 23 home runs and 100 RBI’s. I believe the reason he is not already playing for the Royals is that there is no room for him. You can’t put him at DH and you can’t put him at first base. I think we either need to trade Butler or trade Clint Robinson, because we are just wasting a hot bat. He also had 164 hits in 503 at bats in 134 games.

By looking at these prospects above I think it is fair to say that Kansas City’s future is bright.

Who is your favorite prospect in the Royals farm system?
