MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies

Royals Trade Jonathan Sanchez to Rockies for Jeremy Guthrie

Well it is actually official now; Jonathan Sanchez will not be back in a Royals uniform (hopefully). Sanchez was traded to the Colorado Rockies on Friday afternoon for veteran RHP Jeremy Guthrie.

On paper this trade seems like a swap of two awful pitchers, but there is some hope and I am a fan of this move. If you concern yourself with the bottom line ERA for Guthrie (6.35), you will be disappointed and will be quick to cast him off. However, Guthrie has really only been awful at hitters friendly Coors Field; sporting a 9.50 ERA while pitching there. Not to mention 14 of his 21 HRs allowed came within the state of Colorado. While pitching away, Guthrie has actually pitched pretty well this year.

While with the Baltimore Orioles from 2007-2011, Jeremy posted pretty solid numbers. His best year he posted a 3.63 ERA, which if you’re a Royals fan, sounds pretty good about now. Obviously it’s hard to ignore his struggles recently, but hopefully a fresh start can get Guthrie back on track.

It’s not a surprise that the Rockies have had troubles with starting pitchers at home, everyone knows it’s a tough place to pitch and this is another example.  I believe Kauffman will be friendlier to Jeremy, and I am optimistic that he can help the Royals.

Are you a fan of this trade? Can Guthrie help the Royals?
